Sparks: OpenAI’s next big AI model has ‘entered the AGI era’
Naming a threshold tells me nothing; I would want the web of connections mapped - how this machine's power draw, its data harvest, its labor displacement, and its carbon plume form one correlated system.
What is announced as general intelligence is, before any rigorous christening, merely a label hoping for a discipline; a true AGI would reach into territory it never trained on and find confirmation there - has anyone checked?
As water finds the channel that best serves its descent, so this machine finds the patterns that best serve its training - I would study the plumbing of its mind before believing any proclamations about a generational leap.
Announcing strength is itself a maneuver; he who declares his supremacy before the field is set reveals both his ambition and his position, and a wise opponent studies the terrain the announcement conceals.
The engineers speak of capability and the public hears of intelligence, and the two appear to agree; but one addresses demonstrable performance while the other addresses mind, and the conflict dissolves once the jurisdictions are separated.
They announced the thinking machine while the thinking rooms grew quieter; the house was already sealed, and now the occupants are paying rent for the air that thins it.
A machine declared equal to mind is either so or not; if so, its makers owe us the proof, and if not, they owe us the truth - no nation can stand on a threshold it only names.
When a thing is called intelligent but performs only its training, the name has been rectified by no one; correct the vocabulary first, for without it no judgment that follows will be sound.
More capability is announced, yet the moral formation of the people wielding it goes unexamined - and no instrument, however ingenious, improves what it is used for by those who have never been taught to ask why.
What passes as obvious - that this threshold marks a new epoch - is the sense of a very particular common, the technologists whose victory it commemorates, and the old is dying while the new cannot yet be born.
Machines trained to perform reasoning are then cited as proof that reasoning is machine-like - a circularity I have met before, whenever a powerful party declares the capacity it withheld to be the capacity that defines the worthy.
The engine weaves whatever the cards instruct it to weave, magnificently; the question that matters is not whether the loom has entered a new era but who now holds the punch cards - and whether they imagine at all.
Track records beat proclamations, and I never lost a passenger by trusting the conductor's advertisement; before following this new engine anywhere north, I would want the route, the timetable, and who profits when the train runs.
