On: Eritrean troops reportedly enter Ethiopia’s Tigray region

The report says Eritrean soldiers have crossed into Tigray. The stated cause is the quarrel between the federal government and the Tigrayan party - an incident of rebellion, an accusation of backing. The structural cause sits north of the border and has sat there for a generation: a state on the coast that has never accepted the settlement that took the sea away from it, waiting for the interior to fracture so it could walk back in. When the great power of the region weakened, the neighbor did not need a pretext. The pretext arrived on schedule.
I note the sequence. First the two governments severed ties. Then the troops moved. Diplomats will describe the breaking of relations as the escalation; it was the announcement that the escalation had already been decided. The cutting of ties is not an act of anger. It is a clearing of the ledger before the campaign.
The men of Tigray fought Eritrea for thirty years and won their province and lost their primacy in the same decade. They know what is entering their territory. The federal government knows it also invited it, or permitted it, or found it useful and will later deny the finding. Each party believes it is using the other. This belief is common in wars and rarely survives the first winter.
The previous war in this region killed a number no one has
