On: A Mysterious Nonprofit Run by SpaceXAI’s Top Lawyer Is Paying the Salaries of...

7 October 2026

A private man keeps a purse, and out of that purse the government’s clerks are paid. The state does not know whose coin it spends. This is the news, boiled down to its bones.

Let me subtract the ornament. There is an agency. There is a nonprofit. There is a lawyer who owns the nonprofit. The agency’s workers draw wages from the lawyer’s purse. Strip the acronyms and this is what remains: a hand inside another hand’s glove, and the glove does not know it.

I kept accounts once. I knew what my house cost, what my beans yielded, what I owed and to whom. A debt unnamed is still a debt. A salary is not merely money; it is allegiance made weekly and signed for. The man who pays me owns a piece of my morning. If the public pays me, the public owns that piece. If a private purse pays me while I wear the public’s livery, then the morning belongs to no one - or worse, to the purse.

They call it efficiency. I have heard that word before, and I have learned to weigh it. Efficiency in the mouth of the powerful means: fewer hands between mine and the lever. The machine is not simplified; it is captured and then called simple. A pond may be drained in the name of cleaning it.

What is the cost of such an arrangement? Not the salaries - those are printed figures. The cost is this: the citizen cannot discover whom to petition, because the officer does not know whom he serves. Government by shadow purse is worse than open corruption, for corruption at least announces a price.

I would rather see the bribe in daylight, on the table, than watch it dress itself in nonprofit linen and call itself reform.

The frost came early tonight. Even the ground keeps honest accounts.
