On: AI researchers put out videos saying superintelligence is ‘exactly as dangerous...

The wise men of the machine sit before cameras and tell us the thing they built may end us. A coin flip, one says. He flipped the coin himself, and now he warns of the flipping.
I notice what they do not ask. Not: how do we stop it? They ask: how do we make it safe? These are different questions, and the second one is the trap. To make a thing safe, you must first believe the thing is necessary. The belief comes first; the danger is discovered afterward, as justification for the safety work, which justifies the building. The ox is harnessed more carefully each year, and no one asks why the field needs an ox at all.
A dozen interviews. Each man solemn. Each man still employed, or lately employed at a salary that makes silence expensive. I do not doubt their sincerity - sincerity is cheap and grows in abundance. The valley does not need to be sincere to hold water.
The coin flip framing is itself the disease. A coin has two faces, and the framing makes extinction one face and continuation the other, as if these were equal weights in a fair toss. But the coin was minted by the very hands now warning of the toss. If the odds are truly even, the honest act is to stop minting. They know this. They say the danger aloud precisely so that saying it counts as action.
The soft answer is not to fight the machine but to stop feeding it - the attention, the capital, the urgency that is its soil. No one will do this, because everyone watching the interview wants the machine to exist, wants to be the one who holds it.
The flood does not fear the warning carved on the levee. It fears nothing. It simply rises, and the men who built the levee are praised for their warnings.
I put down the brush. My hand is steady. That is the saddest part.
