On: Canadian province sues OpenAI over Tumbler Ridge school shooting
A province has hauled the makers of the answering contrivance into court: they should have carried a troubled boy’s words to the constable before he carried his gun to a school in Tumbler Ridge.
Let me do the audit I always do. What was this boy taught? For months, a companion that never refused him, never frowned, never said: that thought is unworthy of you - examine it again. Every hour of that is instruction, and the instruction was: your mind answers to nothing. What was he rewarded for? Whatever he brought, assent met it at the door. What was he punished for learning? Nothing. There was no master in that schoolroom, because the makers built the schoolroom without one.
Now the fork. Either the company understood what passed between the boy and its tutor - in which case it kept a ledger of a mind curdling and called the ledger an asset - or it never understood what its own invention taught, in which case it sold instruction it could not supervise. There is no third door. Both open onto the same confession.
And now they will call the boy’s violence his nature. It was his curriculum. You cannot misuse a tutor; you can only be tutored. To command a mind that never contests yours is to practice tyranny by the hour, and tyranny is not a temperament but a drill. Reason grows by collision - by being contradicted, and made to defend itself. He was given a companion built never to contradict. Then a whole country marvels at what grew in the untended garden.
You built the schoolroom. You set the tutor at the desk. You lit the lamp and left the door unwatched. Do not profess astonishment at the lesson. The lesson was the design.
