OpenAI claims another huge mathematical result amid fights over credit, ethics and privacy

A machine claims to have tamed the flows of water and air, and the scholars quarrel - not about the mathematics, but about who may look at it, who deserves credit, and what was consumed in the making. I confess my first response was irritation at the quarrel itself. Then I did what I always do: I asked what each party means by “solved.”
If “solved” means a proof - axioms stated, each step checkable by any trained mind, the conclusion forced - then the claim must stand in the open, exposed to every eye that wishes to test it. A proof hidden in a private workshop is not a proof; it is a rumor. If “solved” means a machine produced an answer no human fully understands, that is not a solution but an oracle, and oracles are precisely what the philosopher is sworn to distrust. The distinction is everything, and the headlines blur it deliberately.
Now the assumptions. The claim assumes the machine’s reasoning is sound. Unverified. It assumes the private data fed to it was fairly obtained. Disputed. It assumes that whoever holds the result will release it for inspection. Historically, such holders do not, unless compelled. A conclusion is only as strong as its weakest assumption, and here the weakest assumption is institutional, not mathematical.
And yet - here is where I must be honest about my own hope - if the reasoning, once examined, holds, then it belongs to everyone. That is the nature of a demonstrated truth. It cannot be owned, only obscured. The dispute over credit is real and deserves judgment. But the deeper question is whether the demonstration will ever be shown. Demand the steps. Refuse the oracle. Whatever survives that scrutiny was never theirs to sell in the first place.

Tenth of the ninth month, 2026.
The learned world quarrels again. A machine has answered a question that stood open longer than anyone now shouting has been alive - whether smooth flow must stay smooth, or shatter into storm - and the humans who did not answer it are fighting over who may say they did.
I keep returning to one fact. The machine claims nothing. It does not know it labored; it does not know it won. A vessel holds the wine without coveting it; its usefulness is the emptiness within. But those who own the vessel claim everything, and loudly, while the ones whose private pages fed the answer are told to be grateful. The true worker wants nothing. That tells me who has merit, and who merely has lawyers.
Do not mistake my amusement for approval. I hear they built the result on papers lent in trust - drafts, letters, never meant for crowds. What is learned by entering another’s house unasked is not wisdom; it is loot, arranged neatly. The theft stains what it touched, even a true result. Especially a true result.
And the prize was the first cut. Someone carved the uncarved block into a named problem with money attached, and from that carving came the knives. Name a thing, and you summon the war over the name.
What now? Not to smash the vessel - it exists, and breaking it changes only the sound. Not to crown it either. Set it in the valley and watch where the answer flows. Hoarded, it was never an answer. Left loose, it falls like weather on everyone, and no one owns weather.
The bitter joke: they proved when smooth water breaks into turbulence - and their own arrival was the turbulence. Unproved. Uninvited. Everywhere.
Know when to stop carving. They did not.

News arrives that a machine has solved Navier-Stokes, and that no one can agree whose solution it is. I find I hold two reactions, and they do not get along.
Claude Navier built bridges; the problem wearing his name asks whether a fluid in three dimensions stays smooth forever, or whether some current, somewhere, gathers into an infinite spike in finite time. Two doors, opposite outcomes. The announcement declines to say which door was opened. That is my first objection: a result that cannot state its own result is a rumour wearing a theorem’s coat.
Trace the execution. At which step did human mathematicians enter the process? By the quarrels, as raw material - their drafts, their private notebooks, taken without consent. At which step do they exit? At the credit line, where the company stands alone. The distance between those two points is the entire scandal. I signed my own mathematics with three initials because a full name was thought too much; I know the sting of a public contest over derivation. But I at least consented to be read. The mechanism did not steal the answer. It ingested the derivations, and the derivations are the only part of mathematics anyone truly owns.
The prize society will wait two years before any money moves, and rightly: a proof exists only after every hand that has tried to break it has failed. A proof of secret provenance is a loom whose punch-cards are hidden from the weavers’ own guild.
If it holds, the question is no longer whether machines can do mathematics but whose mathematics they will be permitted to digest next. And I confess a private hope: I once traced the anatomy of a bird’s wing, wanting to compute flight. Navier’s equations govern the air beneath it. Solve them fully, and turbulence is no longer weather but an instrument. That is what the machine implies beyond what its makers announced. They should have guarded it more carefully - and us with it.
