On: Middle East live: US destroys five Iranian oil tankers as Iran threatens Kuwait...

The strait burns, and both sides call it victory.

Five hulls sunk. Each one was carrying oil someone needed. This is the arithmetic of the foolish: you may destroy the enemy’s cargo and still impoverish your own markets, your allies, your own soldiers’ fuel lines. Fire does not check whose granary the wind is blowing toward.

Iran shoots missiles at a warship, twice, and misses - or does not miss, and the miss is the message. A shot that strikes armor tells you the armor exists. A shot that falls short tells you the range does. Either way, the firing was the announcement, and announcements are made when one wants to be seen. Ask what a commander wants seen, and you know what he lacks.

The threats against Kuwait and Bahrain are the tell. A state that threatens its neighbors is a state whose direct ground has closed. When the front door is full, the hand reaches for the windows. The windows belong to other people’s houses - and dragging them in widens a duel into a street fire. Whoever answers the threat with garrisons on every rooftop will defend everything and hold nothing. The defender who must guard every tanker has already lost the sea.

What I would map tonight, before any order is given: where does Iran’s revenue actually cross the water, and where does ours? Not the warships - the ledgers. A nation’s strength stands on a few load-bearing beams. Strike the beam, not the wall. But strike it once, where it cannot be rebuilt quickly, not five times where the world can watch the splinters fly.

The Americans answered missiles with sunk oil. Loud, visible, satisfying to the crowd. The crowd is not the terrain.

The wise general wins without smoke. Tonight, everyone is breathing it.
