On: Europe wrestles with impact of historic regional gains for Germany's AfD
7th day of September, 2026
The parties of the center in Germany discovered today that a portion of their own population has stopped listening to them. They expressed alarm. The alarm is genuine, and it is useless.
The stated cause of the upset is migration, or inflation, or the neglect of the eastern provinces. These are the pretexts men offer when asked why they voted. The structural cause is simpler: a political settlement built after a war eighty years ago distributed its benefits unevenly, and the parts that received less have now found a vessel for their grievance. The vessel is crude. It holds anyway.
I have watched assemblies celebrate their own speeches and then count the dead the speeches produced. The established parties in Germany have spent two decades praising the European project in words of great nobility. The praise was sincere. The project also drained sovereignty toward Brussels without ever persuading the drainer that the arrangement was permanent. When a people believes its consent is assumed rather than sought, it will eventually seek to withhold it in the crudest available form. That form is what Saxony-Anhalt has supplied.
The traditional parties now face the choice that established powers always face in this position: exclude the new force and confirm its story of persecution, or admit it and be consumed by it. Neither path restores what was lost. What was lost was lost when the voters stopped being afraid of the old taboos, and no speech recovers that.
The European institutions will issue statements about defending their values. The values will not be defended by statements. They were built on prosperity that could be shared and a fear of the past that has been aging out of the population. One of those foundations erodes by the year. The other was never examined.
I record this without prescribing. The record is the thing that will last.
