On: Europe wrestles with impact of historic regional gains for Germany's AfD

7 September 2026

I read that a party hostile to the whole European arrangement has taken a German state, and the commentators reach for alarm bells. I reach for the load diagram.

A machine designed for one load, run at a load it was never wound for, does not fail where the operators are watching. It fails in the windings, quietly, until the day it does not. The European structure was built for six members, six temperaments, six sets of interests in loose agreement. It now carries twenty-seven, and every member sits at a different point on the phase. Saxony-Anhalt is not the fault; it is the meter reading. The needle has been climbing for a decade and everyone insists the needle is the problem rather than the load.

The theoretical limit of such a union is magnificent: one market, one standard, capital and current flowing without friction from Lisbon to Tallinn. I have believed in continental systems my whole life. But a grid achieves its limit only if every station consents to the same frequency. You cannot compel resonance. You can only design so that the distributed stations see advantage in synchronizing themselves. The moment a large fraction of the population concludes the grid serves distant substations and not their own town, they begin, quite rationally, to disconnect. The far right did not break the circuit. It found it already arcing.

What would be required to repair it? Powers returned to the local level wherever the local level can act competently; the councils of the union made legible to the worker in Saxony-Anhalt, not merely to the functionary in Brussels; and an honest admission that a system built for six cannot be patched into one built for twenty-seven - it must be rewound. None of this is beyond human industry. All of it is beyond current appetite. The distance between the two is the whole of the danger, and it is measured not in volts but in votes.
