On: US hits three Iranian oil tankers after saying its warships were targeted
5 September 2026
Tankers burn on open water. The first question is never who struck first - it is who benefits from having struck first.
Missiles at warships, warships against tankers. Each side now points to the other’s blow as license for its own. This is how small fires test the wind before becoming a firestorm.
Oil is not the target. Oil is the terrain everyone must cross. He who can close a strait holds a knife at every economy that drinks from it - and does not need to use the knife for the cutting to begin. Insurance prices rise before any ship sails. The blockade exists in the ledger before it exists at sea.
Note what was struck: not the warships that provoked, but the tankers that profit. Response aimed at wealth, not at force. This teaches the adversary where the pain lives - and teaches every watching nation that its cargo is hostage. That may be the true message, and the fleet merely the envelope.
Yet I mistrust the account itself. Two warships targeted, we are told, by one source. Before moving a single soldier, verify with your own eyes and agents what the reported attack actually was. A state that wants a war manufactures the first shot; a state that wants restraint accepts too easily the shot it is handed. Both dangers stand on this water today.
The escalation ladder is climbed rung by rung, but each rung is a choice. Someone decided tankers were the proportionate reply. Someone else decided missiles at hulls were the proportionate opening. Between those two decisions lay a hundred chances to stand still, and all were declined.
Water adapts to every contour and is defeated by none. These admirals instead shape the sea into a wall. Walls invite siege.
I would know what each side believes the other will not dare. There the next move is already written.
