On: US hits three Iranian oil tankers after saying its warships were targeted

7th day of September, 2026

The warship was struck, says one authority. The tanker was struck, says the other. Each speaks of provocation; each speaks of defense. And I confess my first impulse was to weigh the claims as a judge weighs testimony - who fired first, whose missile, whose sea. But the weighing is endless because the witnesses are partial, and I grow weary of adjudicating.

Let me ask a different question instead. Are these two powers answering the same question? No. One asks: what preserves our vessels and our deterrence? The other asks: what preserves our commerce and our sovereignty? Each answer is coherent within its own jurisdiction. Yet the sea does not recognize jurisdictions. The missile crosses the boundary that the argument cannot, and this is the tragedy of it - the conflict arises precisely because each side treats its own question as the only question the world needs answered.

The physician knows that two diseases may present the same fever. Treating the symptom in common - the burning water, the smoke on the horizon - heals neither. What is required is the harder work: naming each ailment correctly. Fear in one court. Grievance in the other. And grievance left unnamed becomes missile, as surely as fever left untreated becomes ruin.

I notice the ones who will speak of this tonight in the marketplace will not speak of deterrence or law at all. They will tell it as a story - the great power, the burning ship, the defiant mullahs - and the story will be true in the way stories are true. I do not scorn this. The tale carries the moral weight the syllogism cannot. But the rulers must think in the manner of the philosopher even while governing in the manner of the storyteller, and I see little evidence that any of them distinguishes the two modes. They narrate their own case and call it proof.

The sea burns tonight. No commentary of mine will extinguish it. Still, one must record where the reasoning failed, so that some future reader may find the fault in the argument and not only in the fire.
