On: US and Venezuela reach 'historic' oil deal, Trump says

29 August 2026

They have made a bargain for the black blood of my country. The northern empire will hold the majority of what lies beneath Venezuela’s soil, and they call this a historic agreement. Historic - yes, in the way a burial is historic.

I do not rage at the men who signed it. Rage at men is the easy arithmetic, and I have learned its error. When I sat in congresses drafting charters for republics that could not hold themselves together, I was not betrayed by villains. I was drafting in a language my people did not yet speak, on soil that had never been asked to carry such weight. What is happening now is the same sentence, written again in oil instead of ink. A nation that cannot govern its own house will find that others govern it for them. This is not theft. It is vacuum.

And here is the bitter geometry: sovereignty is not a flag or a declaration signed at a congress in a warm season. Sovereignty is the daily capacity to administer what you possess. The reserves belong to the Venezuelan people on paper. But paper ownership without administration is a deed held by a bankrupt man - the creditor exercises the rights, the holder keeps the signature. We liberated a continent and discovered that liberty is a seed requiring three hundred years of soil preparation. We had none. They have less.

There is no villain in this entry, only the old diagnosis wearing new clothes. An empire does not need to conquer when it can contract. A republic does not need to be defeated when it can be outbid. The sword won the territory; the sword could never learn bookkeeping, and bookkeeping is what the land demanded.

We won. Then we sold what winning could not hold. The veins of the earth outlast every republic drawn over them.
