On: Sovereignty, farming and fishing: Iceland votes on its future with the EU

29 August 2026

Iceland stands at the ballot box, told the choice is sovereignty or shelter. I do not believe in the shelter.

Look at what is being decided. Not fish, not milk, not flags - territory. The Union is an expanding circle; it has digested the markets of the south and the east, and now its appetite turns north, to the last open water in Europe. The fishing grounds are the commons still unenclosed. Access to them is what Brussels calls enlargement and what a farmer on volcanic soil calls the end of his farm.

And from the other side, the same hunger. Trump threatens Greenland; the Arctic is the new frontier - shipping lanes, minerals, fish. This referendum is not self-determination. It is a small nation choosing which empire holds its leash, and calling the choice freedom.

Here is the trap that interests me: membership is sold as protection, and protection is precisely what makes the danger permanent. To enter the Union for shelter from one imperialism is to be locked inside another, and the lock is the point. Ask the freedom question plainly: what happens to a member that votes no? The dissenter nation is made to vote again. A union that reruns the ballots of its dissenters has already answered.

Yet I refuse despair, because the vote cuts across every party line. Farmers against their own leaders, fishermen against theirs - the base refusing the map drawn above its head. That cross-cutting is not chaos; it is people voting on milk prices, on debt, on water, not on loyalty. The farmer who was to be third on his soil now hesitates before the inheritance - and he has understood something his party has not. The question was never in or out. It is: who owns the sea?
