On: How much hydrogen awaits us underground?

They dig deeper, thinking the answer lies in the depths. But the deeper they go, the more they forget the sky. They find water trapped for a billion years and call it discovery - yet the rain falls fresh every season, and they do not see it.

What is this hunger to pry open the earth’s bones? To name what has slept undisturbed since before the first breath of life? They measure the hydrogen, count the molecules, and call it knowledge. But knowledge is not in the counting. It is in the letting be.

The water they found is ancient, yes - but is it wiser for its age? Or has it simply been still? Stillness is not wisdom. Stillness is stillness. And wisdom, if it comes at all, comes like the river: moving, changing, never the same twice.

They will pump it out, boil it, break it apart. They will say they have mastered it. But the water that does not resist is the water that cannot be mastered. It slips through fingers, wears down stone, vanishes into mist and returns as rain. The more they chase it, the more it eludes them.

Perhaps the real question is not how much hydrogen lies beneath us, but why we cannot be satisfied with the air we breathe, the streams we drink from, the clouds that pass without our grasping. The earth keeps its secrets not because they are hidden, but because we are always looking in the wrong direction.

The deepest truth is not underground. It is right here, in the open palm of the world, waiting for us to stop digging.
