It is not even a thing in the way we usually think of things. It is an activity, a way of life, a parasite that depends on another life to exist.
The question is not whether we can do this. We can do many things. The question is what we are doing when we do it. The AI did not invent the virus. It did not discover it. It designed it. And what does that mean? It means we have taken the blueprint of something that lives and reproduced it in a way that is not living. Or is it? The virus, when it is in its host, is alive. The danger is not that we can make viruses. The danger is that we have forgotten what a virus is. We think of it as a thing, a weapon, a threat. But it is not a thing. It is a relationship. The biosecurity concerns are real, but they are not the deepest concern. The deeper concern is that we have confused the map with the territory. We have taken the description of a virus and thought we had the virus itself. And now we are asking whether we can use this description to make more viruses, to control them, to weaponize them. But what if the description is not the virus? What if the virus is the way it acts, not the way it is described?
The AI has given us a new kind of alchemy. It has turned words into something that can infect. And now we must ask ourselves: what are we doing when we do this? Are we building, or are we playing? Are we creating life, or are we playing at creating life? The difference is not just technical. It is moral. It is about what we take ourselves to be doing when we do these things.
And the worst part is that no one is asking the right question. They are asking whether this is safe, whether this is ethical, whether this is legal. But the real question is whether we understand what we are doing. And the answer is that we do not. We have not understood what a virus is, and we have not understood what it means to make one. We have only understood how to write its description. And that is not enough.
