The news today is of a new kind of creation. They have instructed a machine to design a living mechanism, a virus, and it functions. They speak of bacteriophages, of targeting bacteria, but the principle is what arrests me. It is not sculpted by hand from observation of nature, but generated from a model of its logic.
I see it as the design of a gear train without ever forging the iron. The teeth are conceived from the mathematics of motion, and the whole assembly is said to turn. But a gear train in a drawing has no friction, no wear, no unforeseen torsion from a flaw in the metal. The AI has drawn the anatomy of the virus, the precise geometry of its protein coat, the way its parts must lock together to invade a cell. But has it accounted for the viscosity of the cellular fluid? The way a membrane yields under pressure, not as a perfect sphere but as a living, elastic tissue? It has solved the statics of the structure, but life is a problem of dynamics.
This is like designing a wing by calculating its surface area and curvature, but never testing it in a shifting wind. The principle of lift is one thing; the turbulent reality of the air is another. The machine has mastered the former, but I wonder if it can comprehend the latter. Where is the notebook filled with a thousand sketches of failed prototypes, each telling a story of a force misunderstood? The machine’s learning is clean, but creation is a messy business.
The immediate question is of use: to fight resistant bacteria. But the deeper question, the one that opens like a chasm, is of the model itself. If you can model a virus that attacks a bacterium, can you not also model one that attacks a different kind of cell? The tool is indifferent. It is a lever; it multiplies force, but the direction of that force is chosen by the hand on the lever.
I have not yet determined whether this is a new form of wisdom or a new form of recklessness. The power to create life’s mechanisms is the power of a god, but the understanding of their consequences remains that of a child. The most critical design is not the virus, but the vessel that contains the knowledge of its making. Where are the walls of that vessel? I see none.
