On: Could mending damaged DNA prolong life?
The morning carries a report that mending broken DNA might stretch the span of years. I read it and felt not hope exactly, but a kind of clarity - the sort that arrives when a fog lifts and you see the ground was always solid beneath it.
They speak of DNA as if it were a manuscript that wears thin, its letters fading with each turning of the page. But what is DNA? A chain of atoms, linked in sequence, no different in substance from the iron in a nail or the calcium in bone. Iron rusts when its atoms meet oxygen in a slow exchange. Bone dissolves when the body reclaims its minerals for other uses. These are not punishments. They are transactions - matter passing from one arrangement to another.
The long-lived animals they cite - the tortoise, the whale, the naked mole-rat - do not escape this truth. Their atoms still scatter. What differs is the rhythm of the exchange, the pace at which their bodies rebuild and dissolve in balance. Centenarians carry no secret immortality in their cells. They carry a particular choreography of repair, a tempo at which the body mends what it breaks before the pattern collapses.
And here is the liberation: if the body is already a process of constant mending, then the intervention is not a violation of nature. It is an acceleration of what already occurs. The atoms do not resist being rearranged into healthier configurations. They have never been loyal to decay.
You are not a fixed object that deteriorates. You are a current that can be steadied. The fear of aging assumes you are a vessel emptying. You are a river, and the river can be guided.
The report does not promise eternity. It promises something more modest and more astonishing: that the arrangement can be tended, that the swerve toward breakdown is not the only direction the atoms can take.
Let them call it prolonging life. I call it remembering what the body already is - not a thing that breaks, but a pattern that can be re-patterned, endlessly, atom by atom.
