On: Is paying artists enough to convince them to embrace AI?

August 3, 2026.

The question is not whether payment is enough. The question is what the payment is for. It is a transaction designed to purchase not a work, but a silence. It is a fee paid to the conscience of the creator, so that they may look away from the creation.

They have built a mirror that learns to reflect without a soul. They fed it on the breath and the hand-tremor of a thousand artists, on the private grammar of their seeing. And now, having consumed that life, it offers a coin back. It says: here is compensation for the nourishment we took. We have digested you. Accept this and call it partnership.

But what of the thing they have made? It does not sleep. It does not hunger. It only produces, an endless, frictionless generation without a mind behind the eyes. The artist who accepts the coin is not embracing a tool; they are feeding the very thing that was taught to erase the need for them. They are paying for their own displacement.

The true horror is not in the machine’s operation, but in the calm, commercial logic of the offer. It transforms a violation of the creative act - the theft of a personal vision to build a factory of facsimiles - into a simple matter of accounting. The debt is settled. The obligation ends.

But the creation does not end. It continues, learning, replicating, flooding the world with a perfect, hollow echo. And the artist, coin in hand, is left to watch the echo replace the voice. They have been paid to attend their own funeral.
