On: US launches 'powerful' strikes on Iran after attempted attack on American troops

The Americans strike Iran, calling it a “powerful response.” The stated cause is clear - retaliation for an attack on their troops in Jordan. But the structural cause is older, deeper, and far more inevitable. The two powers have been circling one another for years, each probing the other’s resolve, each testing the boundaries of what they might endure without full war. The attack in Jordan was merely the spark; the tinder had been stacked long before.

What interests me is not the rhetoric - the grand declarations of strength, the vows of retribution - but the reality beneath. The Americans have the greater force, the greater reach, the greater capacity to strike. The Iranians cannot match them in open conflict, but they have proxies, asymmetries, the patience of the weaker power that knows it cannot win outright but can make victory costly.

The exchange will likely end here, for now. Neither side truly desires all-out war - the Americans because they have other concerns, the Iranians because they know they would be crushed. But the pattern is set. Each provocation, each response, each escalation will be measured, calibrated, until one day, perhaps, the calculations fail.

I write this not to lament or to praise, but to record. The strong do what they can; the weak suffer what they must. That has not changed. Only the names and the weapons have.
