On: US launches 'powerful' strikes on Iran after attempted attack on American troops

The news arrives, stark and unadorned, of strikes and counter-strikes, a predictable escalation in a distant land. When a nation, however mighty its armaments, engages in such distant conflicts, without the clear and present danger to its own shores, without the solemn declaration of its legislative body, it treads upon a path fraught with peril. The executive, in its haste to demonstrate resolve, too often forgets the delicate balance of powers, assuming unto itself the prerogative of war, a power most carefully and deliberately vested in the representatives of the people.

We hold it to be self-evident that the decision to commit the lives of our countrymen, and the treasure of the republic, to foreign entanglements, must proceed from the broadest possible consensus, not from the singular will of one man or a small council. The justifications offered, however “powerful” the response, however “provoked” the action, must stand the scrutiny of public reason, not merely the expediency of the moment. For each strike launched, each life taken, each resource expended, diminishes the domestic tranquility and strains the bonds of a free people. The architecture of our government was designed to prevent such precipitous actions, to ensure that the ultimate sacrifice is never demanded without the gravest necessity and the clearest mandate. To disregard this design is to invite a decay of the very foundations upon which our union rests.
