Another morning, another report that mistakes the symptom for the disease. They speak of alcohol and sex and violence as if these were separate ingredients in some dreadful cocktail, when in truth they are all symptoms of the same moral collapse. The problem is not that young women drink, but that we have given them nothing else to drink from. What formation produces this conduct? Not merely poverty, but the poverty of character - the absence of any moral infrastructure to guide them.

We build schools that teach compliance but not virtue; we fill their hours with distraction rather than purpose. When a society offers no formation in self-respect, no habits of prudence or modesty, it should not be surprised when young people grasp at whatever offers momentary relief from their emptiness. The real danger is not the cocktail itself, but the thirst that drives them to drink it. We must build better wells.
