The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow gate. To lock it is to invite a siege; to threaten the Bab el-Mandeb is to announce that the siege has already failed. One does not extinguish a fire by depriving it of air if the fire has already found a vein of oil. The blockade is a direct pressure that creates an indirect explosion.

The Western power calculates in tonnage and barrels. The Eastern power calculates in friction and time. If the merchant cannot sail, the king cannot rule. By stretching the threat across two seas, the adversary forces the blockade to thin its own line. A force dispersed to guard every wave is a force that occupies nowhere.

Victory is not found in the closing of the gate, but in the shadow the closing casts upon the market. The fear of the void is more potent than the void itself. They fight over the shape of the water, forgetting that water always takes the shape of the vessel that breaks. The terrain is no longer the waves, but the will of those who depend upon them.
